Musk frenzy originally began its life as “Dr Fotheringays Perambulating Fluid” to cure acne and boils - first patented by Dr. Horatio Fotheringay in 1959, this cure-all had some limited publicity in the early 60’s.
However it was found during its release and some years after, the Perambulating Fluid had the surprising side effect of causing a sexual frenzy in ladies by the gentlemen wearing it.
The combined use of pheromone and certain unclassified experimental toxic substances drove some women wild with desire and during the late 1970’s the fluid was bought by a consortium of computer programmers and re-branded as “Musk frenzy” for men.
A nationwide (ill advised) advertising campaign began, but it still only had limited success, as its claims seemed too good to be true. However the cologne did become a household name in most western states during 1988.
Concern was raised that during government testing in 1988 the cologne did cause temporary blindness in some male customers. Also it led to the infamous “Californian incident” where several Chippendale male exotic dancers were hospitalized in the summer of 1989. Even today troupe leader “John Drill-Doe” carries the scars of that fateful night.
The mans magazine “Stags & Ammo” found that a few drops of Musk Frenzy could be blended with the famous 1970’s cologne “Sasquatch - Pour Homme” which gave a much milder effect to the opposite sex.
But it still did not save this infamous brand from the glare of public opinion.
By 1990 a bill was passed to ban Musk frenzy for men. Agents finally took recovery of the last bottles on general sale in an Alabama 7-Eleven store on June 24th 1995.
It’s widely held; that about a dozen bottles remain in the hands of secret collectors around the world.
All other bottles have long since been destroyed.
The cologne Hai Karate also used some of its terrifying consequences in comical advertising campaigns within the uk.
If any bottles did come up for sale on the general market, the owners would face a heavy fine and an enforced spot on the Jerry Springer show. Even though the same bottles could exchange hands for thousands of pounds.
This fascinating infamous product for men is now consigned to the male grooming history books. Musk frenzy's effect in reducing acne and boils was considered by medical experts as negligible.
