The Earl of Landaus Dune Rat-rod the reason why.
The very early origins of the automobile have been lost in the annals of time, but it was purchased by the 4th earl from a Mr. Rasputin Excelsior a mid western witch doctor and confectionary de-bunker.
The original Earl of Landaus Dune Rat-rod itself lacked sufficient “beans”, so a new motor was required.
A discovered overhauled Merlin engine came from a east coast boatyard that went under the name of “Mumphys”. Mumphy was a Budapest immigrant merchant selling girls, aero spares, tabac and angel-dust; until his eventual re-arrest and capture on the golden gate bridge in 1958.
The car was specifically built and raced in the insanity that was the “Isosceles 1000”, in Korea in 1951. This was the most extreme car rally ever held, giving competitors 1000 miles of the most harsh arid landscape, to pit their skills against. Also with the motto of “destiny is oblivion” only the most foolhardy would enter.
The name “Isosceles” comes from the race circuit itself, two lengths of equal sides and one that isn’t (simple really).
The mind-bendingly unique feature of the Isosceles 1000, is that the assigned race track always runs through a warzone or ideally an “active” battlefield, during that current year. Danger x 1000.
“The weak will perish and the brave survive”, was written on the poster, and it wasn’t until the 4th earl passed the many burning car wrecks and bleached bones of past racers during the competition; that he reflected on perhaps a better pastime….maybe gardening?
Surviving the gruelling race by eating sand, shooting people and drinking radiator water, he garaged the car vowing never to race again.
In fact instead of gardening he began collecting, everything from rare antique clocks to err…..ancient statues from Easter island and Aztec totems, (the US import paperwork was horrific).
However this unusual car descended to the 5th Earl, who took the auto out of retirement.
The movie business and starlets.
The Earl of Landaus Dune Rat-rod; made a brief appearance in Grok Sturgis’ key west Armageddon movie - “Alligator paratrooper’s spring-break”. Where it was driven by gangster 3 and gangster 5 in the famous annihilation by helicopter gunship scene. This movie still holds the highest body count for 1991, a total of 17,435 corpses, (98% killed by Grok alone).
Only to be beaten four years later when Mr Sturgis turned his acting to comedy movies, in the straight-to-DVD release “My moms grenade zombies got out!...again”
(Obviously the auto wasn’t destroyed in the film, that was left to a balsa replica), so the auto then sat in the 5th earls beach garage, while he courted obscene starlets, talkie film actresses and eccentric heiresses.
When the Earl was promoted to Grand Wizard of the Orange Firkin Lodge of West Coast brothers, planning permission was a mere technicality for his eccentric beach house. Which began to be assembled in the summer of 1979, plus three garages were added for his unusual vehicles.
The 5th Earl married for the last time (he was married 3 times before), aged 94 to an up and coming starlet “Bimpy Love-pop” (aged 18), who was a trained athlete and socialite; plus she was also famous for her triple F bust.
The earl died 9 days later while on honeymoon in Bancock, due to a massive coronary heart attack. Found dead in hotel Boing Boing, a frantic funeral followed.
Most of his assets were left to Bimpy despite a long and costly legal battle with his ex-wife’s children.
The Earl of Landaus Dune Rat-rod; and beloved beach house, was inherited by the only male aire of the family, (even if he was a second cousin twice removed) where he resides to this day.
A condition of Earl Landau’s will and testament is that the Earl of Landaus Dune Rat-rod; should never be sold and used as often as possible on the beach to scare tourists for sundry reasons; none of which make any sense at all.

The 5th Earl’s heraldry adorns the automobiles radiator (as it did for the Isosceles 1000), and classic Porsche seats were added later, to absorb some of the rough terrain.
